The Coolest Climate in Sri Lanka.

it’s known for its mild climate, the coolest in Sri Lanka, and has much to offer visitors. The town boasts a golf course, trout streams, and Lake Gregory, perfect for boating or fishing. Victoria Park is another popular attraction in the city, a beautiful and well-maintained park that both locals and visitors enjoy. Birdwatchers visit the park to spot various bird species, including Indian blue robins, pied thrushes, scaly thrushes, and Kashmir flycatchers that live in the park’s dense undergrowth.

A Sea of Tea

Founded in 1846, Nuwara Eliya earned the nickname ‘Little England’ due to its past. The town’s elevation of 1,868 meters above sea level gives it a climate that is more similar to that of the United Kingdom. With average year-round temperatures in the mid-teens and rainfall for half of the year, it’s an ideal place to experience yet another British tradition. Most of the town’s attractions are located outside of the city, making it difficult to associate them with Nuwara Eliya. However, this allows for long and scenic drives that showcase the beauty of the surrounding area.

As far as the eye can see, tea covers the hillsides like a sea of green, rolling in on the waves. Lake Gregory and the grand colonial buildings are reminiscent of home, albeit taking you back in time by about 120 years. Most attractions are located outside of the town, which can make it challenging to associate them with Nuwara Eliya. However, this also means long and picturesque scenic drives.
