Top Things to Do in Tangalle

Swim at Goyambokka Beach

Although the beaches in the Tangalle area are stunning, most of them are not suitable for swimming due to the strong waves. However, Goyambokka is an exception as it has tranquil bays with a reef that reduces the waves, making it an ideal spot for swimming. It is one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka and has wide stretches of white sandy beaches, perfect for sunbathing and relaxing.

Turtle Watching at Rekawa Beach

Rekawa Beach serves as a nesting ground for various species of turtles, such as the green turtle, loggerhead turtle, hawksbill turtle, olive ridley turtle, and many others. The Rekawa Turtle Watch is a marine conservation project that aims to safeguard the nesting sites of the turtles to ensure the safe hatching of their eggs. If you visit the beach from April to July, which is the peak season, you can witness these turtles every night, but please keep in mind that it requires patience to spot them.

Watch Hummanaya Blowhole

The Hummanaya Blowhole is the second-largest blowhole in the world, which can be a spectacular and exciting sight to watch. The water can reach an impressive height of 25 to 30 meters (82 to 98 feet) and is most remarkable during the monsoon season.

 Surf at Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya Beach is just a 20-minute drive from Tangalle town and is a well-known spot among surfers. If you are new to surfing, you can take lessons at this beach and start learning how to surf in Sri Lanka. You’ll find several shops offering surf gear rentals along the bay, which is shaped like a horseshoe. You can rent a surfboard on an hourly basis from these shops.

Tangalle Beach is a perfect destination

If you’re looking for a relaxing and peaceful holiday experience, Tangalle is the perfect destination for you. The stunning white sand beach will transport you to a tropical paradise. With coves and beaches on both the north and south sides, the white sands spread for kilometers at a time. Tangalle used to be a fishing community that was greatly affected by the 2004 tsunami, but the community has been rebuilding since then. Although the beaches and bays in this area are truly stunning, not many people visit it, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquility.
